The Barbarian and the Geisha

John Huston-directed period drama in which American diplomat Townsend Harris (John Wayne) is sent by President Pierce to Japan to serve as the first US Consul-General...but finds his aversion to the country matched only by his attraction to a young geisha girl. Based on a true story - the original geisha actually killed herself in 1892.
