The story of a horrifying miscarriage of justice, set in New Zealand; that it must be one of the most monstrous cases of its kind there can be little doubt. The man concerned, tried for double murder of a nearby farmer and his wife, is convicted on the flimsiest of evidence, part of it allegedly planted by police, and amazingly convicted again on an unprecedented second trial after police had allegedly rigged evidence and jury alike. Subsequently... but you must see for yourself; certainly the story bears its own horrific fascination. Only slackness in direction and presentation are to blame for the fact that it does not grip as perhaps it should. David Hemmings is all smugness and corruption as the inspector who initially goes around accusing everybody in the hope of flushing out the guilty party. John Hargreaves gives a performance of Anthony Perkins-like intensity as the accused man.
