A real oddball film with Liz Taylor as a much married, exceedingly rich but dying woman, guarded on her mountain-top retreat by a dwarf and his dog pack, who becomes involved with Richard Burton, as an ex-gigolo nicknamed Angel of Death. Noel Coward plays a character called the Witch of Capri, which gives you the flavour of the proceedings and the whole mixture was originally brewed up by Tennessee Williams in his play The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore. But if the main course may be too strongly flavoured for some people's taste, their are major compensations provided by some outstanding colour photographic direction by Douglas Slocombe, and Joanna Shimkus, who scores best in the acting stakes. The overall feeling, however, was that this was one of director Joseph Losey's more disappointing efforts.
