A consistently enjoyable pre-war Warners gangster romp, with Edward G Robinson and Humphrey Bogart as hero and villain, just as they had been in the studio's Bullets or Ballots. Robinson plays a criminologist who joins a gang of thieves (headed by Bogart as a character called Rocks) to study the criminal mind. Claire Trevor oozes class in the female lead and the supporting cast is positively stuffed with familiar faces - and one familiar voice. Needing a good speaker for the voice of an unseen radio announcer, the studio picked on one of their young contract players: Ronald Reagan.
