An absolutely charming piece of film whimsy about a tired old ghost who is doomed to roam his ancestral home until one of his descendants performs a deed brave enough to lift the curse of cowardice from his family. With Charles Laughton in top comedy form as the ghost, and the delightfully un-sugary Margaret O'Brien - even making a passing effort at an English accent - as the little girl who befriends him, it's a rich piece of escapist entertainment. The director's identity is a surprise though: it's Jules Dassin, later to make The Naked City, Brute Force, Never on Sunday and Rififi.
