In this thriller French director Claude Chabrol reserves the best for last. And although this was perhaps not the best of his work (it was the first of his films to get a general release in the UK, doubtless on the strength of Perkins' presence), there is much to admire and unravel for the viewer. The plot, punctuated with baffling murders, has to do with the battle for power in a Champagne empire.
