Graham Greene's famous story, adapted for the cinema by Greene himself, about a group of people in strife-torn Haiti, all of whom find that they have, in modern parlance, to make some sort of commitment. The story suffers from the central casting of Burton and Taylor, who are essentially `stars' but Alec Guinness is particularly good as the strange Major Jones-just as much at home in Greene-land here as he had been eight years earlier in Our Man in Havana. Lillian Gish and Paul Ford are consistently enjoyable as archetypal innocent Americans abroad, caught up in events beyond their comprehension. A very strong cast of coloured actors in support includes the talented Cicely Tyson, winner of an Emmy Award for her performance in the TV film The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.
