This genial Western is based on the true experiences of Frank Harris, who found that the lure of life on the range was too strong to ignore. Jack Lemmon considers it one of his favourite films and certainly his comedy-flecked study of a raw novice on a cattle drive is most attractive. Glenn Ford is impressive as the leathery cattleman who accepts Harris into partnership and then proceeds to teach him the business the hard way. Delmer Daves' direction achieves a happy balance of action and quizzical humour. Lemmon, who was no horseman, claimed to have had his saddle soreness cured by local anointment with whisky by the unit wranglers.
