Much more relaxed in style than most of the thrillers directed by Jacques Deray with Alain Delon as star, this is a closely-observed if leisurely-developed drama of four people making what might be described as uneasy circles round each other until one of them predictably bites the dust, or rather the water, as most of the suspense centres on the swimming-pool of the title. Edgy performances from Delon, Romy Schneider, Maurice Ronet and Jane Birkin.
