Well-made and suspenseful, this war film doesn't involve the emotions as much as director Lewis Gilbert's best work in the genre, such as Carve Her Name with Pride and Reach for the Sky, although the ending is undeniably moving. Timothy Bottoms, Anthony Andrews and Martin Shaw lend unexpectedly little personality to the three Czech saboteurs out to kill Czech Nazi leader Heydrich, a role in which Anton Diffring is as marvellously hateful as ever. The action scenes, though, are all well-staged.
