Director Lamont Johnson's status in critical circles rose steadily after the advent of You'll Like My Mother and The Last American Hero in the early Seventies. Here's a chance to see the first film directed by this young ex-actor, a tale of death and deceit in America in the Twenties. To be shown in its full 96-minute version, compared with the 72 to which it was cut for its first release in this country, it's a rather heavily melodramatic thriller. George Maharis is somewhat negative as the hero, but there are more colourful performances from Laura Devon, Katy Jurado and Sidney Blackmer. Gene Hackman also does well in one of his earliest film roles.
