Director Vincente Minnelli had the right light touch for this bright, entertaining comedy-drama about a little boy trying to pick his widower dad a new wife. The boy is played with charm by Ronny Howard who appeared in a string of films after his success in The Music Man (also with Shirley Jones), carved out an adult career for himself in such films as American Graffiti and Smoke and has gone on to similar success behind the camera as director of Splash and Cocoon.
