The title hardly suggests that this is a `biopic' of the rise and fall of the late Senator Joseph McCarthy, whose controversial communist witchhunt in the early Fifties caused such a furore. Peter Boyle is cast in the role of McCarthy, Burgess Meredith plays an attorney who defends the army against McCarthy's charges, and Patricia Neal is a lady senator who stands up to the fearsome Joe.
