A Western for Agatha Christie fans. Director Henry Hathaway takes a firm grip on the tension from the opening card game that engenders a lynching, and never lets up - as the card players are killed one at a time by a mysterious assassin. Robert Mitchum is perhaps larger than life as a gun-toting preacher, but Dean Martin is extremely good as the reluctant 'hero' and strong supporting work comes from Inger Stevens, Yaphet Kotto and Bill Fletcher. Excellent Technicolor photography ties up an underrated thriller package.
