A workmanlike, if not-too-inspired, airing for what must be one of the oldest western plots around - the gunman who tries to retire but has to face yet another fast gun to whom the word has somehow got around. Director Russell Rouse ensures that the ensuing events keep one guessing until the end of the last reel. Glenn Ford gives an edgy, carefully-considered performance as the man whose prowess with a gun hangs over him like the sword of Damocles, but the most powerful portrayal comes from Broderick Crawford, as the man hunting him. Such familiar faces as Russ Tamblyn, Allyn Joslyn, Leif Erickson and Noah Beery Jnr decorate the fringes of the action.
