The last crime film directed by Mervyn LeRoy, this was made at Warners, scene of such great Le Roy successes as Little Caesar, Five Star Final and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang. It rambles a bit from time to time, and barely escapes distasteful hero worship of the FBI. But James Stewart is a pillar of strength and integrity (just as well, as this film doesn't have the liveliest of supporting casts) and enough ammunition is expended in numerous thrill-a-minute segments about famous gangsters to make the average Untouchables story on TV appear sedate by comparison.
