Despite its title, this isn't a sports film, although softball is the link between the main characters - four middle-class men reaching middle age and having to deal with differing mid-life crises. Rob Reiner (who later turned director and made When Harry Met Sally... ) is the third baseman in the team and his marriage is floundering. Bob Costanzo is deep in debt, Christopher Guest is married to an alcoholic and Bruno Kirby's bachelor lifestyle is beginning to lose its gloss. It's all far lighter than it sounds. When Reiner is separated, he finds his friends need help too and his attempts to give it provide most of the film's humour. An enjoyable, if not riveting, drama.
