British critics clapped after a preview of this film, principally because of an emotional bomb of a performance by Judy Garland, cast in a role which sadly reflected parts of her own life. Co-star Dirk Bogarde, in an underwritten role, gives her generous support, but the film only really comes alive when Judy's either on stage, or explaining in impassioned terms just what makes a high-voltage performer tick.
