Howard Hawks was at his pinnacle when he directed this grand-scale movie which stars John Wayne and features Montgomery Clift giving one of his most attractive performances. Its sprawling story concerns the epic first cattle drive from Texas towards Missouri, along the Chisholm Trail. Wayne's towering portrayal of pioneer cattleman Thomas Dunson dominates even this quality cast, including Clift, John Ireland, Walter Brennan and Coleen Gray.
