A mixture of romance and political allegory, this grim film focusses on the plight of Pierre, played soulfully by Omar Sharif, doing years of hard labour on an island off the coast of an unspecified country (Greece? ) while his wife (Florinda Bolkan) fights for his freedom or even the luxury of a visit. Director Eric Le Hung's treatment is perhaps too literary to set the film up as the perfect indictment against the treatment of political prisoners.
