Fifth teaming of Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon in a typical grand-scale MGM vehicle for their popular talents, chronicling the fortunes over 60 years of a maid who becomes a great lady. Great supporting roles from pompous Edward Arnold and shifty Dan Duryea as two of the dowager Garson's grasping relations. The epic stature to which the film aspired is effortlessly reached by director Tay Garnett and a great production team, entirely overcoming an indifferent script to bring a lump to the throat at the end.
