Hollywood has filmed the Jesse and Frank James saga at least a dozen times, most versions trying to analyse why the James Brothers turned outlaw. Some have claimed they were victims of circumstance; others have painted their characters black. This film, which professes to have the facts, shows them to be a bit of both, but ends as almost a complete failure. Robert Wagner as Jesse and Jeffrey Hunter as Frank at least look like brothers, but Wagner is second-rate and only Hunter and Agnes Moorehead salvage something from the wreckage of the rest. The way the story is told, in flashbacks, sums up the general cohesion of the film. Boring in parts, ridiculous in others, the tale does at least have a few sturdy bursts of action and will look good in widescreen.
