Shadowy stalking and midnight murders pop up regularly in a wartime thriller about the activities of a partisan group in Greece. Robert Mitchum appears in his familiar role of the trench-coated American correspondent and Theodore Bikel staunchly leads the Greek resistance. The female lead is played by Elisabeth Mueller, a German actress brought over to America as a great new star to play opposite Robert Taylor. Alas, the magic didn't last, and that film and The Angry Hills were her only English-speaking roles. The supporting cast is stuffed with noteworthy names, from Donald Wolfit and Marius Goring (as yet another German officer) to Jackie Lane, who later had a Hollywood career under the new name of Jocelyn Lane. In fact, behind every Greek rock lurks a familiar film face.
