The casting couldn't be bettered in this potentially fascinating but ultimately lacklustre look at a famous Hollywood 'relationship' that ducks most of the relevant issues involved. A pity, as Robert Mitchum is a towering presence as the magnate determined to make a star out of his chorus girl mistress, played with fire and lots of emotional credibility by lovely Virginia Madsen, surely a star of the future.
