Director Howard Hawks made several fine Westerns with John Wayne - others were Red River and El Dorado - and here's one of the best-regarded, on Hawks' favourite theme of a tightly-knit group of goodies, beset by their own failings as much as anything else, taking on a whole nest of baddies. It's long but involving, with an unexpectedly good performance from Dean Martin. The villains, though, could be more menacing.
