Charlie Chaplin's final starring film, a satire on America and its communist witchhunts. The film received only a limited release in its native Britain and wasn't seen at all in America until 1973.
Yet it has some funny moments, as the deposed European king collides head-on with New York in the midst of the celebrity-obsessed rock 'n' roll era.
When the film goes serious towards the end, one longs for a return to these blissful interludes of slapstick, especially when the king chokes on an item he is advertising in front of the television cameras.
Shani Wallis and Joy Nichols pop up as singers, and the invaluable Sidney James is one of Chaplin's supporting players.
