A vivid, gruesome chiller, starring Joan Crawford as a woman jailed for two particularly grisly axe murders - a type of killing that begins all over again when she is released from jail 15 years later. Down go the lights, bang goes the door on the victim, up screams the music and there, sure enough, is that shadowy figure on the wall, axe aloft. Appropriately the screenplay was penned by Robert Bloch, who wrote Psycho. Much of the time, director William Castle tips the suspense over into melodrama and doesn't keep in touch with reality; but at least it can never be accused of not being lively. Whether you die giggling or of fright is a matter between you and your nerves. STAR SPOT: Lee Majors in his first film role (under his real name, Lee Yeary), long before he became the Six Million Dollar Man.
