Tautly-strung murder mystery, mostly thanks to Henry Hathaway's direction on unfamiliar London locations, with Van Johnson giving one of his best performances as a blind investigator on the trail of a kidnap plot. Even so, he can't stop portly Cecil Parker from stealing the show as his secretary-cum-assistant. Parker's description of his pursuit of a suspect through London is the highlight of the film, while the plot itself - written by novelist Nigel Balchin - stirs up a fair amount of tension round its theme of the criminal trying to turn the fact that his main pursuer is blind to his own advantage. Remake of a Thirties British thriller called The Nursemaid Who Disappeared.
