Sophia Loren's Oscar-winning tour-de-force in an Anna Magnani-type role that few believed she was capable of playing. But Sophia was superbly moving as a wartime widow with a teenage daughter. Their survival after horrendous rape at the hands of Moroccan soldiers makes for an involving and emotional story. The desolate atmosphere of war-torn Italy is superbly captured by director Vittorio de Sica.
