Richard Burton's choice of roles in his last years was not always the happiest, but this is one of his most striking and intense portrayals: a homosexual East End gang leader who treads people down like insects. The whole thriller is as tough as its central character and Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement - more usually associated with comedy series - contribute a script that drips venom.
