A taut, moving Hitchcock suspense film, underrated in its day, told in semi-documentary style and based on a true story. Henry Fonda is just right as the sensitive musician bewildered by the way circumstantial evidence piles up against him on a robbery count. Vera Miles gives the finest performance of her career as his mentally fragile wife. The film was also one of the first to employ the talents of British actor Anthony Quayle in a major role; but he quickly established himself on the international scene.
