Director Michael Anderson's old-fashioned courtroom drama, set in the days of the Raj, overflows with smashing true Brit performances. Three cheers for the stiff-upper-lipped performances of Michael York, Richard Attenborough, Trevor Howard, Christopher Plummer and Susannah York - all of whom have their characters off to a T. The screenplay's a fascinating debate on moral values, reflecting the more serious attitudes of the Seventies. Oddly, the quintessentially American actor Stacy Keach makes a splendid job of playing a British officer. Though it's rather too obviously based on a play (by Barry England), the movie's a success all round.
