Not exactly a film that celebrates the finer qualities of the American cinema. In fact, Burt Reynolds' performance as the cynical police lieutenant at the centre of the story is the only saving grace of this routine, facile police thriller in which director Robert Aldrich never misses a chance to emphasise the sordid and the unnecessary. Catherine Deneuve, Eddie Albert, Ernest Borgnine and Ben Johnson are also involved, none of them to any great effect, with Johnson offering one of the few poor performances he ever gave. STAR SPOT: At the foot of the cast, a young Robert Englund, later Freddy Krueger in the 'Elm Street' films, makes one of his earliest appearances, as a hold-up man.
