In his last film, John Wayne plays JB Books, an ageing gunfighter who is diagnosed with terminal cancer and starts looking for a way to die with dignity. Surrounded by fantastic support from Lauren Bacall, James Stewart and Ron Howard, Wayne gives a memorable performance that's much stronger and subtler than his Oscar-winning turn in 1969's True Grit. A magnificent and beautifully shot Western from Don Siegel (Dirty Harry), this is a note-perfect epitaph to Wayne's impressive cinematic legacy.
