Throughout all its zany situations, this crazy comedy about early silent movies only rarely manages to raise a laugh. Director Peter Bogdanovich's pacing seems at fault and his actors might as well be in plastic bags as they thrash about trying to register as real live characters. Only Stella Stevens breaks out of the clutches of the script to provide us with some genuine spark. Ryan O'Neal, Burt Reynolds, Brian Keith and Tatum O'Neal give sub-par performances: inexperienced leading lady Jane Hitchcock is a washout. Even photographer Laszlo Kovacs is less than his admirable self. At least it's a genuine family movie: if only it were a good one too.
