This is what we used to call a cloak-and-dagger movie. The beginning, with a gold bullion robbery, is exciting, precision stuff. But the long arm of coincidence stretches mighty far in the exposition of the central story about an assassination attempt on General Patton. Sophia Loren, in particular, has a thankless task as the woman who seems to have been 'involved' with half the people in the plot, which itself gets progressively more unlikely with every change of Loren's un-Forties-like costumes. John Cassavetes is effective as the investigating officer on the case, but the rest of a distinguished cast do themselves less than justice.
