An elegant, marvellously well-produced if somewhat florid version of Jane Austen's book, liberally laced with charm, humour and style. Delightfully acted by a very strong cast, it's full of good things. Clark Gable, Robert Donat, Norma Shearer and Vivien Leigh were all in the running at one time for Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, the roles played eventually by Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. But Garson and Olivier had played Romeo and Juliet together in an early TV transmission of Shakespeare's play, and they make a first-class team.
