Director David Wickes and star Michael Caine follow up their mini-series Jack the Ripper with this slashing `sequel' in which Caine pads after the footsteps of such stars as Fredric March, Spencer Tracy, Jack Palance, Anthony Perkins and many others in presenting contrasting portraits of the good doctor and the terrifying Mr Hyde into whom he turns at the swallow of a serum. The two dramas have in common an excellent re-creation of Victorian London, plus Wickes' deft handling of the grislier aspects of the case. And Jekyll receives an extra benefit from being half the length of the earlier production.
