Director Lamont Johnson has been responsible for outspoken TV movies before (The Execution of Private Slovik, That Certain Summer, Fear on Trial, Crisis at Central High). Here, he and writer John Sayles (who also takes an acting role) are the steam behind a sad and angry drama that punches home the tragedy of the effects of defoliants on American soldiers in Vietnam. Powerhouse performances from John Ritter (as a dying Vietnam `vet') and Alfre Woodard, dynamic as the crusading counsellor who helps his cause, provide the engine that drives the docu-drama forward to a moving conclusion.
