This typically glitzy musical farce from Julien Absolute Beginners Temple is a throwback to the Sixties, when all blondes were bimbos and beach bunnies fawned around smirking surfers. Add a visit from a spacecraft and you have a sort of Beach Blanket Alien. For at least an hour the tackiness, although intentional, is just overwhelming. It does get a bit better towards the end, though, thanks largely to the sympathetic efforts of Jeff Goldblum (mysteriously billed fourth in the beginning credits) and then-wife Geena Davis, a six-foot, liquid-lipped charmer who was already proving herself too good for this sort of thing. Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans are almost unrecognisable beneath furry get-up as the other two aliens, and neither man's career was to take off here as they later did.
