A fascinating account of how an actor, ME Clifton James (who plays himself in the film), was passed off as General Montgomery, in an attempt to make the Germans believe that the invasion of Europe would come from North Africa. This amazing deception actually made Hitler hold a Panzer division in the South of France. The screenplay, a compact and compelling piece of work, was written by Bryan Forbes. The only point in his scenario which may annoy students of history is the fictional attempted kidnapping of 'Monty' by the Germans. The real ending was more amusing: James (he had been seconded from an Army office) returned to his base and was arrested as a deserter!
