Somewhere in a small American town that never was, we encounter Hayley Mills as one of the do-gooders of all time, melting hearts of stone and winning a special Oscar in this massive money-spinner from the Disney studio. David Swift's easy-going direction and well-written script inject the old-fashioned exercise with a lot of charm. Jane Wyman and Nancy Olson resolutely refuse to let Hayley's urchin appeal hog the limelight, dispensing laughter and tears with a practised grace. Despite the thick sugar coating, the old story is at times still very entertaining.
