Although the film lacks pace and atmosphere the polished performances of Jennifer Jones (as Nicole Diver) and Joan Fontaine (as her older sister Baby Warren) are some compensation in this disappointing version of F Scott Fitzgerald's novel about the tormented emotional life of an ex-patriate American couple. But spectacular locations and a feel for the period can't make up for director Henry King and writer Ivan Moffat failing to get to grips with Fitzgerald's coruscating (and corrosive) characters.
