Not even Steven Spielberg could afford a cast like this today. But in 1936, they were all part of what later became known as the MGM Stock Company. So forget the strained quality of this historical drama, and the fact that Joan Crawford looks at ill-at-ease as a period flibbertigibbet. Just admire the costumes, photography and the depth of a cast that includes Crawford, Franchot Tone, Lionel Barrymore, Robert Taylor, Melvyn Douglas, James Stewart, Beulah Bondi (Oscar-nominated) and Louis Calhern.
