A `cinema' version of an original seven-hour mini-series which won Faye Dunaway the best supporting actress award at the first annual TV Movie Festival. The story wavers between soap opera and a much deeper kind of story that follows the fortunes of two immigrants to the United States just after the turn of the century. Viewers with some British bias towards the all-star cast (which includes Richard Burton in his last role) may think La Dunaway is outshone by our own Judi Bowker, who turns in a first-rate performance as a blind Irish girl who falls in love with one of the two main characters.
