A warm-hearted, incident-filled combination of western and pioneering drama from the Disney studio, based on the conventional opposition between might and right. The mountain locations are stunning, and veteran character star Jack Elam gets a chance to create a real character instead of being a mean villain or a figure of farce. Ronny Howard, who plays the son of the family trying to make a go of farming in the wilds of Wyoming in the 1880s, is the same Howard who later turned director with such effect on Splash, Cocoon and others.
