Handsomely shot (as one would expect from the record of its cinematographer, Sven Nykvist), this first attempt at direction from the actor Max Von Sydow is very much in the mould established by the director he most admires, Ingmar Bergman. Sensitive, intelligent and even at times poetic, the film is still a trifle gloomy and somewhat lacking in dramatic punch. But the two leading actors, Tammi Ost and Ole Ernst, really get under the skins of their tragic characters.
