Picturesquely set in the Somerset countryside, this Children's Film and TV Foundation production was adapted from Thomas Hardy's story of the same name. Lovingly set in period by director Diarmuid Lawrence, it was shown at the London Film Festival in 1986, and has a cast of enthusiastic juvenile players, plus adults (including Anthony Bate, Thomas Heathcote, Sean Bean and the Oscar-winning Brenda Fricker) who are proven experts in rural characterisations.
