An uneven comedy-drama, but one with plenty to recommend it, not least the witty and cynical dialogue written by Nunnally Johnson, who unfortunately also directs the film - in leaden style. Still, Henry Fonda and Leslie Caron play with pleasure and their elegant and carefully-studied performances are a treat.
