This ludicrouly overpumped melodrama emerges as a pop promo video cross between The Godfather and East Side Story. Young lovers form the opposite sides of the Chinese-Italian tracks meet meltingly at one of those gehtto discos where everybody seems to wear vests, and are promptly engulfed in gang wardare whose hot-headed elements are supposed to be kept in check by their own side. The characters do little but scream and shout at each other, beat each other with heavy metal or blast each other bloodily with heavier artillery. However viciouly beaten, though, they all get up and run away when the cops arrive. Director Ferrara tops it off with overdone lighting effects and portentous close-ups of inanimate objects. His film, very slow for its running time, is dedicated to the people of Chinatown and Little Italy, but I should think they'd want to give it back.
